SOLAR ELECTRIC Systems Explained
Solar electric power is generated from sunlight using Photovoltaic (PV) Panels. PV Panels are sheets of photoelectric semiconductors, typically mounted on the roof, that convert the sun’s radiant energy into electricity. The resulting electricity is similar to the DC from a battery and uses electronic inverters to convert the DC into 115 volts AC.
The solar-generated AC power is connected to the LIPA wires that supply power to your home or business. This is part of the net-metering system to dramatically reduce your electric cost by selling your excess solar power to LIPA.
A PV installation…
- Provides free solar-generated electricity for your house
- Generates more power than is typically needed during the day.
- Surplus power is supplied to LIPA and credited to your account through “net metering”
- Pays for LIPA usage at night or during peak demand times
